The Places We Keep
— V. The Light Someone Left On —

Some people leave so quietly…
we only discover they stayed years later.
Not because they kept writing.
Not because they kept calling.
Not because they remained part of our lives.
But because something they left behind quietly became part of ours.
A chair they always chose.
A way of listening.
A lamp they switched on before everyone else arrived.
A kindness so ordinary nobody thought to remember it.
Until one day…
without meaning to…
we catch ourselves doing exactly the same thing.
And for a brief moment…
it feels as though someone we thought had gone…
has just walked back into the room.
We do not see them.
Only the light they left behind…
still waiting for someone to need it.
Some people spend their whole lives wondering whether they mattered.
Perhaps they never knew…
they were still lighting someone else’s way.

Some stories return to the same places.
Mine tend to.
