The Places We Keep
— I. The Empty Chair —

Most of us remember a place where we did not know if we belonged.
Sometimes it was a classroom.
Sometimes a group of friends.
Sometimes a room where everyone seemed to understand the rules except us.
And we remember something else.
The person who noticed.
Not the person who solved everything.
Not the person who changed our entire story.
Just someone who made the empty chair beside them feel like an invitation.
Years later, we give names to many things:
empathy.
creativity.
connection.
belonging.
But perhaps some of the most important things we build as adults come from very simple memories.
The moments when someone made space for us.
And the moments when we decided to make space for someone else.
Because sometimes belonging does not begin with a big gesture.
Sometimes it begins with someone looking around and asking:
Who is missing?

Some stories return to the same places.
Mine tend to.
