The wolf’s name got there before he did.

Tracks in the mud: the wolf. Missing hen: the wolf. Fence down at the far edge: the wolf.

He learned to lower his head before they asked.

He stopped explaining. Then stopped coming close. Then stopped.

His tracks kept showing up, though. Nobody connected that anymore.

One night the flock slept quiet and peaceful. Nobody knew why.

Moral:
Inherit the blame long enough
and you learn to disappear.
Which becomes its own kind of evidence.
